High Score Expanded Rusel DeMaria 9781541090903 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this! It's very well written and filled with tons of nostalgic information and tidbits. For any other retro gamer fans....or game developers, like myself. Thanks for bringing this out!
This is one of those books that you have to have if you are interested in the game industry story.
As a game developer and a teacher, I believe that if you want to know where the industry can head to, first you need to know to know where it's coming from.
Rusel does a great job in this book and I can't wait for the next one!
This book is so incredibly detailed and it's obvious the care that Rusel put into creating it. Sure, this information is available online but the time you'd have to spend looking this up makes this book all the more special. As someone who considers himself pretty well versed on this topic, there were surprisingly a lot of facts and details I did not know.
Would REALLY like to have a "coffee table" edition though. Please let that be in the works!
A book for anyone that's ever played and loved a video game. High Score is a massive, illustrated trip down memory lane, covering everything from the obscure to the iconic throughout the history of electronic/digital entertainment. Games from consoles, computers, and coin-ops are all here with facts and trivia often from the very creators of the games or systems themselves. For someone like me, an avid gamer, this book is 400+ pages of nostalgia and awesome.
There are many people out there who can tell fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about the people and ideas that make up the video game industry, but I've never yet found a book that's been able to do this across such a wide range of companies, time periods, and communities.
This book is both detailed and broad. It begins well before video games with the story of Pinball and the early history of the computer, then proceeds all the way through the release of the XBox, which occurred around the time this book was originally published. This version contains a great deal of new information, new, more modern layouts, all in a digital format (where it used to only be available on dead tree).
It's less a formal history than it is a dense accumulation of stories and reporting. Lavish with photography, screenshots, and game posters, it's the sort of book that, if left out, will constantly be picked up and passed around by visiting friends.
The author is working on extensive additions to the book, to cover game history from around 2000 until the present. I'm looking forward to seeing what he creates.
High Score is a very comprehensive game history with tons of illustrations and photography. Nearly 3,000.. yes that's THOUSAND.
There are never before seen photos of Shigeru Miyamato and many others as well as some excellent box scans and in-game screens to take you back in time to your favorite gaming moments, or educate you about many games and people you may not have known about.
The book is full of interesting facts which will have you reading it from cover to cover!
The expanded edition adds a whopping 40+ pages of new content including an exclusive look at the true story behind Xbox, as well as the Bungie/Halo story.
This book is a must own for anyone who is into this amazing hobby!
I have the 1st edition of this book in physical format and it is one of my favorite books on video games.
This new and expanded version is even better, as it taps into some of the stories that the first one missed.
Well researched, this book provides an insight not only on the games but also on how the industry progressed from the early days up to the 6th console generation.
High Score Expanded is full of interesting stories and does not shy from some of the best hidden gems, like the Star Control series, and the book becomes better for it.
Highly recommended.
